Quality and patient safety abroad

The patient insurance of the country providing treatment is always applied in care given abroad, if such is available. Each EU country has a statutory patient injury insurance system.

You can find out the requirements for treatment quality and patient safety from the national contact point of the country of destination. The contact point in question will provide advice also in the event of a medical error or you are dissatisfied with your treatment.

The treatment provider should provide information about treatment options and about its own operations

The treatment provider must give you sufficient information about the planned treatment and procedures to enable you to make informed choices concerning your care. The treatment provider should inform you about

  • different treatment options
  • quality and safety of treatment in the facility in question
  • licences and registration of the treatment facility
  • liability insurance of the treatment facility.
