10 years of EU-healthcare.fi – a website built with our customers

16.10.2025

EU-healthcare.fi will turn ten years old in October 2025. Over the last decade, the site has evolved and developed–always with the customer in mind. To mark the anniversary, let’s take a look at the history and development of the site.

Where did it all start?

The website for cross-border healthcare was launched in 2015 under the name Choosehealthcare.fi. It was the first national website to compile information about the freedom of choice in Finnish healthcare and cross-border healthcare.

In May 2019, this information connected to the freedom of choice in Finnish health care was moved to the online service Suomi.fi. From then on, the Choosehealthcare.fi site focused on giving guidance on the international aspects of healthcare. With the help of our customers, the new site was named EU-healthcare.fi, which better describes its international nature.

Information on health services abroad and in Finland

The EU-healthcare.fi website is where we share current information and reliable information on using health services abroad and in Finland. We give you advice in different situations if you want to travel abroad for treatment, need treatment in Finland or want to learn about your rights and practices in cross-border healthcare. We also tell you how to get reimbursed for treatment, or what to consider when travelling with medication.

The website is available in Finnish, Swedish, English and Northern Sámi. In addition, there are summaries of the most important information in Finnish and Finnish-Swedish sign language.

Content for people travelling abroad and coming to Finland

Year after year, the most popular content on our website is country-specific information on healthcare in more than 30 countries. Country-specific information is useful if you fall ill abroad or are planning to get treatment in another country. Our readers are also interested in issues relating to the export and transport of medicines while travelling, and the costs and reimbursement of treatment.

In addition to those travelling abroad from Finland, our website also provides guidance to customers coming to Finland and acts as an information bank for healthcare professionals.

The site is constantly evolving

Over the past ten years, we have updated the content, structure and layout of the site several times. Our aim is to make the site clearer and easier to use. Our customers’ wishes have guided the development: for example, the content of the homepage has been modified based on feedback, and new visual elements have been added to the site to support the presentation of information.

The website is developed with the help of a customer panel that participates in surveys, testing and workshops.

Better service through cooperation

The EU-healthcare.fi website is maintained and developed by the Contact Point for Cross-Border Health Care. Our partners, such as Kela, the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare and the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, are involved in producing and developing the content of the website.
